Who should have a Colonoscopy? What happens?

Screening is easier than you think and recommended for the following:

  • Patients that are age 50 or older.
  • Individuals with a history of polyps or colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy should be done every 3 years.
  • Person with a First degree relative with polyps or colorectal cancer
  • Individuals that have been diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis.
  • Crohn’s colitis: Contact your gastroenterologist to discuss screening.

  • Individuals with symptoms such as change in bowel movements (change in stool caliber) and abdominal pain, bloating or blood in stool should contact their physician right away. These recommendations are only a guide and you should discuss any concerns with your physician.
