The Borland-Groover Clinic has spent the past year testing a program for medical offices to go green, and now the Florida Medical Association is ready for a full-scale launch.

The FMA recently unveiled its Green Doctor Office Program, a free online guide for doctors’ offices to save money and improve their environmental practices. The program, which is a public service of the FMA, is self-administered through a practice’s own “green teams” with the goal of becoming a certified green medical office.

A practice completes a series of workbooks and has weekly meetings as part of the program, which encompasses energy and water efficiency, renewable energy, solid waste and recycling, drug disposal and chemicals, transportation and commuting and healthy foods. Also included is an essential public education commitment in an effort to extend information on going green to the public.

“There are millions of people in waiting rooms around the country, so why not use that as an opportunity to talk about all the ways to reduce waste and energy, and use that time to improve community and environmental quality?” said Dr. Todd Sack, a gastroenterologist at the Borland-Groover Clinic who championed the program.
